YK when you put your children in a cage the more they want to escape, they won't learn to be independent, self-discipline, and a sense of self, as you guard them so tightly they wont be able to grow. This results into having a "savior" either they become obsessed or dependent with their parents or a person who is different from them that they think set them out of the "cage" they will follow them like a child.

Basically they are developmentally stunted, so the stage where in they learn autonomy is delayed as you don't let them make decisions themselves and they don't have a sense of self, thus they can only follow

TLDR; they never went through puberty/rebellion
